Tres Cantos, Madrid.

Hoy volví al museo. De nuevo a las salas 40-44. Estuve cansado porque creo que me estoy poniendo mal. Úrsula lleva mucho tiempo con una tos que no se le termina de quitar y creo que me ha contagiado.

El caso es que estuve cansado en las salas, deseando que terminara la jornada. Ya en casa me puse un poco con Judit y eso que la tarde no acompañaba nada. Se puso oscura y también con viento. Apenas si modifiqué un poco las alas de Judit. Desde el primer día no he tenido clara la posición de las alas. Parece que ahora están un poco mejor.

Today I returned to the museum. Back to rooms 40-44. I was tired because I think I’m getting sick. Úrsula has been coughing for a long time and it doesn’t seem to go away, and I think she has infected me.

The thing is, I was tired in the rooms, wishing the day would end. Back at home, I spent some time with Judit, even though the afternoon wasn’t very inviting. It got dark and windy. I barely made some modifications to Judit’s wings. Since the first day, I haven’t been sure about the position of the wings. It seems like they are a bit better now.

Tres Cantos, Madrid.

Hoy estuve de nuevo en el Museo del Prado. De nuevo en las salas 40-44. Hoy puedo comentar sobre los anacronismos en las pinturas. En la sala 44 está «Moisés salvado de las aguas del Nilo», de Veronese. En este cuadro todos los personajes van vestidos con ropas contemporáneas a la época del pintor, nada que ver con el Egipto de los faraones. Ni siquiera el paisaje o la ciudad que aparecen al fondo son de la época de Moisés. Deduzco que al Veronés le gustaría retratar a los personajes de su época, aunque a los artistas entonces no gozaban de la libertad de los de ahora.

En cuanto a mi pintura, trabajé un poco en «Judit». Arreglé algo la cabeza de Demetrio y cambié un poco el pelo de la chica.

I was back at the Prado Museum today. Once again, in rooms 40-44. Today I can comment on the anachronisms in the paintings. In room 44 is «Moses Saved from the Waters of the Nile» by Veronese. In this painting, all the characters are dressed in clothing contemporary to the painter’s time, nothing to do with the Egypt of the pharaohs. Not even the landscape or the city in the background are from the time of Moses. I deduce that Veronese would have liked to portray the characters of his time, although artists back then didn’t enjoy the freedom they do now.

As for my painting, I worked a bit on ‘Judith.’ I fixed Demetrius’ head a bit and changed the girl’s hair slightly.»

Tres Cantos, Madrid.

Esta mañana volví al Prado, de nuevo a las salas 40-44, donde estoy todo el mes. Otra vez estuve analizando los cuadros… A los vigilantes no nos queda otra. Eso, ver al público y darle vueltas a la cabeza son nuestros pasatiempos. Pues bien, me planteé la cuestión acerca de cómo aplicaban estos pintores el óleo dado que tiene una textura diferente a los míos. Son unos colores más espesos, creo, y aplicados sobre un estado previo más oscuro, que dejan ver muchas veces. También ahora le doy vueltas a cómo se han realizado los marcos… ¿Con pan de oro? ¿Pintados?

Chica-ángel, opus minor 4/2024

En fin, en la tarde no pude pintar debido a las clases, así que por la noche continué con la chica-ángel de estos días atrás (opus minor 04/2024). Hice algunos retoques y amplié el fondo.

This morning I returned to the Prado, once again to rooms 40-44, where I’ll be all month. Once again, I was analyzing the paintings… The guards don’t have much else to do. That, watching the public and mulling things over in our heads, is our pastime. Well, I pondered how these painters applied oil paint since it has a different texture than mine. Their colors seem thicker, I believe, and applied over a darker base, which is often visible. I also now wonder how the frames were made… With gold leaf? Painted?

Anyway, in the afternoon I couldn’t paint due to classes, so in the evening, I continued with the angel-girl from the past few days (opus minor 04/2024). I made some touch-ups and expanded the background.

Judit y Holofernes o la chica-ángel que amaba el arte,

Hoy también tuve el día libre. También aproveché para volver al ataque con Judit. Estuve pintando un rato por la mañana y otro por la tarde. Entre otras cosas, seguí depurando, con dificultad, la cara de la chica. Además, también cambié, de posición primero y de tamaño después, la cabeza de Demetrio. ¿Y qué tal el resultado final? Bueno, mejorable, pero poco a poco… Esta quiera o no quiera, es mi forma de hacer cuadros: corrigiéndome una y otra vez. Poco más. Espero que me dé tiempo.

Today I also had the day off. I also took the opportunity to resume working on Judit. I spent some time painting in the morning and some more in the afternoon. Among other things, I continued refining the girl’s face, albeit with difficulty. Additionally, I also changed the position first and then the size of Demetrio’s head. And how was the final result? Well, it’s improvable, but little by little… This, whether I like it or not, is my way of painting: correcting myself over and over again. Not much else. I hope I’ll have enough time.

Judit y Holofernes o la chica que amaba el arte, 18 de febrero de 2024

Hoy no fui al museo. Pasé un buen rato con Judit. Necesitaba entregar una foto del avance de la obra y tenía en mente variar el cuerpo de Judit. Resumiendo, el tiempo apremiaba y yo quería hacer cambios drásticos. ¿Qué hice al final? Lanzarme.

Subí la parte del hombro y ello me llevó a cambiar la posición de la cabeza y esto, a su vez, a cambiar la cara. Así que, al final me pasé todo el día tratando de crear otra cara nueva (copiada, pero al fin y al cabo nueva). El resultado final no me disgustó, aunque todavía falta mucho por hacer.

Today I didn’t go to the museum. I spent a good time with Judith. I needed to deliver a photo of the progress of the work and I had in mind to vary Judith’s body. In short, time was pressing and I wanted to make drastic changes. What did I do in the end? I took the plunge.

I raised the shoulder area and that led me to change the position of the head and this, in turn, led me to change the face. So, in the end, I spent the whole day trying to create another new face (copied, but ultimately new). I wasn’t displeased with the final result, although there is still much to be done.

Judit, 17 de febrero

Hoy tuve que ir al museo en horario de tarde por lo que pude pintar un poco por la mañana en Judit. Básicamente, lo que hice fue cambiar otra vez las alas e intentar mejorar el tronco de la chica. Curiosamente me cuesta menos hacer una cara que un torso. La primera tiene muchos puntos de referencia, mientras que la segunda es más una masa con pocos sitios donde apoyarse (al menos para mi nivel de anatomía).

En cuanto al museo, me tocó estar con la Mona Lisa. Pasé bien la tarde, observando este y otros cuadros.

Today I had to go to the museum in the afternoon, so I was able to paint a bit in the morning at Judit’s. Basically, what I did was change the wings again and try to improve the girl’s torso. Interestingly, it’s easier for me to paint a face than a torso. The former has many reference points, while the latter is more of a mass with few places to lean on (at least for my level of anatomy).

As for the museum, I ended up with Mona Lisa. I spent the afternoon well, observing this and other paintings.

Hoy volví al museo y también a las salas 40-44. Pese a llevar en esta sala varios días y haber estado a menudo anteriormente, todavía no conozco bien las obras.

Cuando paseo por las salas pienso que me gustaría saber más sobre los personajes retratados. De algunos sé algo, por ejemplo del propio Tiziano o de Juan Federico I de Sajonia (por ser contrincante de Carlos V y aparecer en cuadros de Lucas Cranach el viejo), pero de los demás no sé nada.

Por otro lado, pasé por la cuesta de Moyano y compré La vida de Carlos II el hechizado, de José Calvo Poyato y Mahoma y las conquistas del Islam, de Francesco Gabrieli.

En cuanto a mi pintura, continué con Judit deshaciendo los cambios del último día.

Today I returned to the museum and also visited rooms 40-44. Despite spending several days in this room and having been there often before, I still don’t know the works well.

As I walk through the rooms, I think I would like to know more about the characters portrayed. I know something about some of them, for example about Tiziano himself or about Juan Federico I of Saxony (for being a rival of Charles V and appearing in paintings by Lucas Cranach the Elder), but I don’t know anything about the others.

On the other hand, I walked past Moyano slope and bought «The Life of Charles II the Bewitched» by José Calvo Poyato and «Mohammed and the Conquests of Islam» by Francesco Gabrieli.

As for my painting, I continued with Judith undoing the changes from the last day.

Cádiz, a 2 de agosto de 2016

Hoy he continuado con el cuadro del que hable ayer y al que todavía no he puesto nombre. Está pintado con acrílico y todavía no me manejo muy bien con esta técnica. En todo caso, está resultando complicada su resolución. Hay un tema central que partió con un esquema en espiral y varios temas secundarios en los laterales. Como el inicio fue azaros, ahora me cuesta encajar las partes y darles una unión, un nexo común.

Hoy mientras corría (1) vi una exposición en la Cárcel Real. Trataré de ir a verla antes de irme.

(1) Durante estos días de vacaciones solía correr dando la vuelta al casco antiguo de Cádiz. La antigua Cárcel Real se ha reconvertido actualmente en museo.

Today I continued with the painting I mentioned yesterday, to which I still haven’t given a name. It’s painted with acrylics, and I’m still not very adept with this technique. Nonetheless, resolving it is proving to be quite complicated. There’s a central theme that began with a spiral outline and several secondary themes on the sides. Since the start was arbitrary, now I find it difficult to fit the parts together and give them a common connection.

Today, while I was out running (1), I saw an exhibition at the Royal Jail. I’ll try to visit it before I leave.

(1) During these vacation days, I used to run around the old town of Cádiz. The former Royal Jail has been converted into a museum.

Comienzo a escribir este diario en Cádiz, mientras estoy de vacaciones y donde me he traído unos lienzos pequeños y un bloc exclusivo de acuarela y otro de esbozos y acuarela.

Primer esbozo de la pintura «Espiral»

El pasado sábado tras llegar a Huetor-Tajar desde Madrid comencé una acuarela que todavía no he terminado (1) . Representa una mujer con un fondo con manchas de colores. Hay varios contrastes entre colores complementarios.
No estoy todavía muy conforme con esta acuarela. Al tratarse de una idea sin mucho, bueno realmente sin ningún análisis previo, pues luego todo se complica.

Hoy también me he decidido a comenzar uno de los lienzos que tenía preparados. Tampoco he hecho ningún estudio antes de ponerme. Ha sido un poco automático y no sé si llegará a buen puerto. El cuadro tiene los elementos comunes en mi pintura (2). Varias mujeres aunque una es la principal, el mar y un hombre similar en postura a la mujer de «Los turistas diletantes«

Cádiz. August 1, 2016.

I begin writing this journal in Cádiz, while I am on vacation and where I have brought some small canvases and an exclusive watercolor pad and another one for sketches and watercolors.

Last Saturday, after arriving in Huetor-Tajar from Madrid, I started a watercolor that I have not finished yet. It depicts a woman against a background with splashes of colors. There are several contrasts between complementary colors. I am not entirely satisfied with this watercolor yet. Since it is an idea without much, well, actually without any previous analysis, everything then becomes complicated.

Today, I also decided to start one of the canvases that I had prepared. I haven’t done any study before starting. It has been a bit automatic, and I don’t know if it will turn out well. The painting has the common elements in my work (2). Several women, although one is the main figure, the sea, and a man similar in posture to the woman in «The Dilettante Tourists».
